The bulk of the papers comprise files created by Ellis during the course of her career. They contain general correspondence, papers and correspondence relating to her academic career and her involvement with various organisations and associations, typescripts of many of her articles and papers and drafts of her unpublished books. There are very few personal papers in this collection, apart from some contained in files of correspondence with Luise Hercus and Herbert Zaszlo. A large part of the collection comprises primary source material accumulated by Ellis during the course of her research, dating from the 1950s. Material is contained in notebooks, tapes, cassettes, conference papers, drafts, articles, research material, slides, music transcriptions, correspondence, and sound recordings related to aboriginal music.

Her particular interest was in the musical structure of traditional Aboriginal songs of the Central South Australia region.
